Syria, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas — what do they have in
common?
The brave and resilient people in these places have all endured
unthinkable catastrophe, the kind that takes generations to recover from.
As a resident of Puerto Rico I’ve experienced this firsthand — Hurricane
Maria, and now the recent earthquakes, have been devastating.
But the people in these places all have another thing in common: They
benefit from the commitment and generosity of Partners In Mercy, a special
group of steadfast, monthly givers.

As conflict in Syria rages on, the devastation doesn’t make as many
headlines as it used to, but that doesn’t mean the need for help has gone away. In
just the last several months, hundreds of thousands of people have been
forced to flee their homes as a result of the violence in both northwest
and northeast Syria.

Mercy Corps teams are on the ground providing emergency supplies, water,
sanitation and hygiene services, and shelter assistance. But the need is
great. And in these winter months when temperatures can dip below
freezing, there is an especially critical need for tarps, heaters and
blankets. [ [link removed] ]Your monthly gift could help provide items like these.
Likewise, the news has mostly moved on from Hurricane Dorian in the
Bahamas, yet there is still much to be done. With the support of Partners
In Mercy,
Mercy Corps team members are aiding in economic recovery by helping small
businesses get back on their feet with grants and training, as well as
delivering clean water through a water treatment plant we installed with
our partner, Mission Resolve Foundation.

And here in Puerto Rico, I’ve been working with Mercy Corps since
Hurricane Maria to help communities increase their disaster preparedness
by setting up "resilience hubs" in community centers, equipped with solar
panels, clean water storage systems, community action plans, and so much
more. During disasters, communities themselves are the first responders,
and we saw these disaster preparedness efforts pay off in the aftermath of
the earthquakes earlier this month. In addition to activating the
resilience hubs in the days and weeks after the earthquakes, Mercy Corps
supporters like you helped us distribute solar lanterns, equipped with USB
chargers, and emergency cash to affected families.

Earlier this week, my colleague Adrienne sent an email talking about
Partners In Mercy as a kind of subscription to humanitarian values. I
really like that idea.
For decades, most charitable givers waited until December to make one gift
per organization they supported — usually a larger gift. More recently,
we’ve seen a lot of people switch their annual giving to monthly, in part
because they can actually make a larger contribution over the course of
the year by breaking up their giving into smaller monthly payments. For
instance, people who used to budget $50 per year
can now afford $120 because they break that gift up into 12 payments of
just $10 per month.
[ [link removed] ]I hope you see how you can make an even bigger difference — a
steadier, more reliable impact — by becoming a Partner In
Mercy, especially while we’re still able to match your first monthly gift.
This match offer ends at minight tonight, though. Please, don’t wait.
Sincerely,
Karla Peña
