I’m proud to sponsor a piece of legislation that means so much to me: The Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act.

This legislation is named after my late mother who passed in June 2021 from pancreatic cancer. She was my family’s rock and the person whose leadership inspired me to run for Congress in the first place. As Selma’s first Black City Councilwoman, she was a trailblazer for Alabamians to look up to.

Now, with this groundbreaking legislation, it’s my hope that her name also symbolizes progress in the fight against cancer. I hope that Congress will pass this bill, which would create an avenue for Medicare to cover new multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests.

These revolutionary MCED tests can detect more than 50 types of cancer, including pancreatic and ovarian, which are difficult to detect with current screenings offered through Medicare.

Families across the country who have felt the devastating impact of cancer know just how life-changing this legislation is. It would modernize the Medicare program to ensure that seniors have access to the best possible cancer detection equipment, helping detect and treat cancer earlier than ever before. This will go miles in the fight to crush cancer’s mortality rate.
