John, I recently visited Antakya, Türkiye. The damage from February’s earthquakes is almost unfathomable: What was once a beautiful, historic, thriving city center is now a pile of rubble.

On my trip, I met with children and families who were displaced by this disaster, and I’ll be honest, their stories are heartbreaking. Many have lost loved ones or are recovering from injuries sustained during the quakes and aftershocks. More still saw their homes and everything they owned destroyed. Parents are at their wits’ ends worrying about where their traumatized and terrified children will sleep each night, what they will eat and how they will ever recover from this devastating disaster.

In total, 2.2 million people in Türkiye were left homeless by the earthquakes. Because Türkiye is host to the largest population of refugees in the world, many who were forced to flee life-threatening conflict are now displaced for the second, third or fourth time. This only compounds children’s trauma and the long-term threat to their health, education and safety.

I realize it’s a lot to take in – both the visible damage of shattered cities and the invisible damage which, particularly for children, is going to take a lot longer to repair.

But knowing there are generous people like you out there gives me so much hope in moments like this. Thanks to your support, our Children’s Emergency Fund had the resources to respond to these earthquakes quickly and effectively. In addition to providing emergency shelter, hygiene kits, warm clothing and other essential supplies, we’ve set up child-friendly spaces where children can get the psychological support they urgently need right now.

Of course, the road to recovery is long. When an emergency like this strikes, our teams are among the first to respond and the last to leave – we remain as long as it takes to help children and their communities recover. The Children’s Emergency Fund is an essential resource as we respond to the significant increase in the number of people who need humanitarian assistance. By supporting the Children’s Emergency Fund, you provide fast and efficient aid to communities facing crises in the United States and around the world, when children’s lives and well-being are most at risk.

As our emergency response efforts in Türkiye and Syria continue and as we work to ensure we are prepared to respond to whatever crisis erupts next, we’re asking for your generosity. Please, will you donate to the Children’s Emergency Fund now to make sure we can continue to provide lifesaving resources and care to children in crisis?
