Jack, last Thursday's move by Tennessee Republicans to expel two young Black lawmakers was disgraceful. And there's more to come from Republicans across the country, as they push more fascist anti-democratic moves to stifle dissent.
We must send a message loud and clear, and the first step is to have Reps. Justin Pearson and Justin Jones re-appointed. Now that the GOP state house has expelled them, their county commissions can appoint an interim successor before calling a special election.
The Metropolitan Council of Nashville & Davidson County has scheduled a special meeting today at 4:30pm, to consider re-appointing Rep. Justin Jones. We also need the Shelby County Commission to do the same, and vote to re-appoint Rep. Justin Pearson.

On April 6, the GOP Tennessee House expelled two young Black lawmakers (Justin Pearson of Memphis & Justin Jones of Nashville) for speaking out on gun violence.
This was only the 3rd time since the Civil War that Tennessee House members were expelled: the others were for bribery and sexual harassment allegations. And it's all part of a disturbing pattern by Republicans across the country to silence voices of dissent with fascist moves.
Fortunately, something can be done here. The Nashville Metropolitan Council and the Shelby County Commission must now appoint a replacement for the two lawmakers before a special election is called. They can vote to re-appoint Rep. Justin Pearson & Justin Jones.
Expelling these lawmakers for eloquently representing their constituents was a direct assault on our democracy. The county commissions must now respond by re-appointing them.
