As an undocumented immigrant who moved to the US from Mexico when I was 3, I never thought I’d get to share my story with the Vice President of the United States, friend. Let me tell you how I got there:
After the victory at the Supreme Court reinstated DACA in 2020, I filled out my application without hesitation.
I felt like I had won the golden ticket when my application was accepted.
But when Judge Hanen shut down the DACA program for new applicants a short time later, I couldn’t help but think of the 80,000 first-time applicants whose applications weren’t accepted and whose lives were put on hold.
While I was grateful for the protection from deportation, work permit, and access to higher education that came with my DACA status, it was a bittersweet feeling knowing the same relief and protections were taken away from thousands of other eligible immigrants.
As long as 80,000 other immigrant youth who had their applications frozen — and the millions of other undocumented people who don’t qualify for DACA — are left without protections, we must fight for a pathway to citizenship.
That is what I told Vice President Kamala Harris, when I was part of a group of activists who were invited to the White House to honor the 10th anniversary of DACA.
With 9 Republican-led states trying to end DACA for good, I told VP Harris that we NEED her administration to act urgently to deliver citizenship and protect immigrants.
As an undocumented immigrant, I never imagined I would speak face-to-face with the Vice President or attend a meeting at the White House. But the organizing power of our immigrant youth-led movement has made our demands for citizenship undeniable.
