On Friday night, a Trump-appointed federal judge with long-standing anti-abortion views ruled to restrict nationwide access to Mifepristone, the abortion pill used for over half of the abortions in the U.S. This ruling is a devastating blow to reproductive freedom, counter to generally accepted medical practice, and will put the lives of countless Americans at risk.

Here’s where we stand now – thanks to the work of Governor Murphy and legislative Democrats, the constitutional right to abortion is codified in New Jersey state law. However, in seven days when this ruling goes into effect, this case (at least temporarily) will prohibit doctors in New Jersey from prescribing Mifepristone.  

While we don’t know exactly what the ruling will mean for the future of medication abortions in New Jersey and elsewhere, New Jersey Democrats will continue to fight for bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom today and every day.
