Friends,
It started in the middle of a 35-day government shutdown, and now it's closing with an impeachment vote.
Friends -- my first year in Congress was something I never expected. The Lowell Sun -- my hometown paper -- wrote about some of my reflections over the last year.
I'll be the first to tell you how polarizing Washington can seem based on the daily headlines. But fighting for the issues that matter most to our families has taught me a few critical, encouraging lessons in my first year.
There are times when finding common ground is necessary. Addressing the opioid crisis, strengthening infrastructure, and giving a boost to local communities by supporting minor league baseball are all too important to get lost in the gridlock. Working with some of my Republican colleagues this year, we were able to spearhead safer prescribing practices, propose critical investments in our water infrastructure, and create a task force to help save Minor League teams like the Lowell Spinners.
There are also areas where it's important to not back down from the promises made to your constituents. Whether it's fighting for gun safety reforms, strong unions, or reproductive healthcare -- we have to know when to stick to our closest values.
Lastly, legislating doesn't happen in the headlines or on social media. Of course political divisions exist across the country, but there is still a yearning to get things done. There are so many colleagues I've gotten to work with this year because we found commonalities between our communities and figured out how to help each other.
And Friends - I can't thank you enough for your input and time in my first year. Your support is the reason I'm able to do this work.
While navigating the waters in my first year has been extremely rewarding, I'm even more excited to see what else we can accomplish moving forward.
Lowering prescription drug prices, implementing gun safety reforms, investing in public education, and protecting clean air and water -- the months ahead are a critical window for us to keep up the fight.
If you're able to, I hope you will support my 2020 re-election campaign by contributing whatever you can today before our End of Month deadline tonight.
