Big Reading Challenge aims to raise funds for more free books for children

Nottingham City Council is holding another Big Reading Challenge in a bid to raise funds for a charity that gives free books to children in the city.

City Councillors ? including the Leader, Cllr David Mellen ? will read to children at schools, libraries, nurseries and children centres across Nottingham. Large-scale readings will even take place to crowds at a Notts County football match and a Nottingham Panthers ice hockey game.

Running from Monday 27 January to Sunday 2 February 2020, the Big Reading Challenge aims to raise ?5,000 for Dolly Parton?s Imagination Library ? an amazing scheme that delivers a free book every month to children from birth up until the age of five.

Nottingham City Council Chief Executive leaving to take up new role

The Chief Executive of Nottingham City Council is leaving at the end of April after being appointed by the Secretary of State for Education to the new role of Chair of Children First Northamptonshire, a Trust for Children?s Services in the county.

Ian Curryer, 57, has served in the council?s top job for seven years, overseeing a period of major change for both the council and the city.

Hazardous fly-tip leads to suspended prison sentence for Nottingham man

A Nottingham man who admitted fly-tipping five large piles of dangerous waste including asbestos has been handed an eight-month suspended prison sentence.

Nathan Cossey dumped the items near Colwick Park, off Daleside Road East, over a period of two weeks and Nottingham taxpayers were left with a bill in excess of ?5,300 to have the rubbish removed by specialists.

Officers from Nottingham City Council?s Community Protection team acted on complaints from the public in early August 2018 and gathered intelligence which led them to believe that Cossey would be at the site again on August 28.

Nottingham hosts service to remember victims of the Holocaust

Nottingham?s Council House hosted a ceremony of commemoration on Monday for victims of the Holocaust on Monday 27 January.

The memorial service, organised by Nottingham City Council, One Nottingham, Nottingham City Homes and the city?s Inter-Faith Council, marked National Holocaust Memorial Day. The theme this year was ?Stand Together?.

Holocaust Memorial Day is on the same date each year and allows people from all backgrounds to come together, remember the past and reflect on racism and intolerance in society today.

Apprenticeships 'fire it up' campaign image with apprentice engineer

Nottingham City Council is supporting the 13th annual National Apprenticeship Week, which runs from 3-9 February 2020.

To celebrate the week, Nottingham City Council and key local organisations, which work together as part of the Nottingham Jobs initiative, want to raise awareness of the fantastic opportunities available across the city and encourage residents to apply for the latest apprenticeships.

Partners across D2N2 unite to support unemployed people

Nottingham City Council and partners across the region have announced a new range of support activities for unemployed residents, especially those facing personal or economic barriers to finding a job.

Called Way2Work, the three-year project, part-funded by the European Social Fund, will support unemployed people who face multiple barriers to work. The project will specifically help people without basic maths and language skills, single adult families, people from BAME communities, the over 50s, and people with disabilities or health conditions which have a long-term and significant impact on their daily lives.
