I enjoyed being back in the District this week to meet with the great folks of Eastern North Carolina.
On Wednesday, I spent the morning with Habitat for Humanity visiting some of its ongoing projects and discussing legislative priorities. Through dedicated service, they bring together countless volunteers to provide a place that families can call home. These families must put ‘skin in the game’ to receive these homes. They are not receiving handouts but a helping hand up. I look forward to seeing how these sites will positively impact the lives of so many.

Later that day, I joined Wayne Community College as the college celebrated 65 years of excellence in preparing men and women for a lifetime of success. It is a costly myth that everyone needs to start at or go to a four-year college or university. A community college program is a fantastic and less expensive route to a great job and profession. Dr. Patty Pfeiffer - the President of Wayne Community College - was able to tell me about her storied background as a nurse, her time in the Army, and now the role she plays fostering a strong program at Wayne Community College. The future of North Carolina is in good hands as long as leaders like Dr. Pfeiffer are charged with educating the next generation.

I wanted to provide you with some other uplifting news from the District. This week, NASA announced its crew for the Artemis II mission around the moon. One of the crew members is NC-03’s very own Christina Koch. She graduated from NC State in 2002 and will join the crew as the Mission Specialist on a ten-day voyage next year. She’ll be the first woman astronaut to travel around the moon, charting the path for future Artemis missions which plan to land the first woman on the moon. Christina will be representing North Carolina - and the entire WORLD - on her mission. We are immensely proud of Christina for her historic endeavor and for serving as a trailblazer for young women.

Recently, our District was struck with heartbreak. Staff Sgt. Caleb Gore was tragically lost in a Black Hawk crash near Fort Campbell, TN. The Gore family is a cornerstone in the community: both Caleb and his wife graduated from West Carteret High School and his father is the pastor of the Fremont Missionary Baptist Church in Wayne County. Wendy and I are praying for the Gore Family as well as the families of those lost in this tragic crash.

I was busy last week in Washington addressing issues facing North Carolinians, working in Committees, and meeting with students.
We all know how high gas prices are affecting our daily lives. In fact, gas prices are 44% higher today than they were when President Biden took office. That is valuable money out of your paychecks every single month. That's why House Republicans took a monumental step in addressing the energy crisis brought on by two years of President Biden's war on American energy. HR 1 - the Lower Energy Costs Act - is the first step in reducing energy costs by slashing burdensome regulations, increasing production, and expanding domestic infrastructure. This is all part of House Republicans’ Commitment to America. Promises made, promises kept!

At last week's House Ways and Means Committee hearing, I advocated for American patients by questioning Health and Human Services Secretary Becerra as to why the Biden Administration is cutting lifesaving research and development. You can watch our entire dialogue by clicking here or on the image below.

When I wasn't working in committee, I was busy serving as Co-Chair on two caucuses: the brand new Iceland Caucus and the House GOP Doctors Caucus.
On Thursday, I joined my Democrat colleague and Co-Chair, Rep. Chellie Pingree, in launching the Iceland Caucus. We welcomed Iceland Ambassador to the U.S., Bergdís Ellertsdóttir, and our friends at the Iceland Embassy to share a meal and discuss the importance of our new caucus. Iceland is a gorgeous country and a trusted friend as well as trading partner of the United States. Plus, Iceland has done some amazing things in gaining near energy independence. Our caucus will play a key role in strengthening the relationship between our two countries.

Later that day, I joined my fellow Co-Chairs of the House GOP Doctors Caucus to speak with health care leaders and stakeholders on National Doctors' Day. We discussed the growing burdens, frustrations, and sleepless nights that our physicians face. The tsunami of ever-increasing regulations in the midst of perpetual reimburse cuts is, at times, making life untenable for one of the nation’s most revered professions. I look forward to continuing our work on the Doctors Caucus to address these debilitating issues head-on.

I also had the pleasure of meeting with some bright students from Duke University’s Graduate and Professional Student Government to discuss North Carolina coastal resiliency policies. Haley, Caroline, and Everett are currently working on their Master’s Degrees in fields such as Environmental Management and Public Policy. Through their different areas of study, they were interested in how research and development can be applied to reduce the risks of coastal erosion. We also discussed how North Carolina’s changing coastline has evolved over millions of years, and what we can expect in the future. Coastal erosion is a complicated issue that so many Eastern North Carolinians face. These students’ dedication and passion for addressing this issue fills me with hope for the future.
