Since we watched yet another slaughter of our children, in Tennessee, the masks, or should I say hoods, have come off Republican state legislators.

Over the past few days, students marched to the statehouse to protest the fact that after the latest mass shooting in Nashville, Republicans planned to do nothing.

Though nothing might have been better than what they did do, which was to put forward a bill to arm teachers and also …

Three Democratic state legislators: Reps Justin Jones, Justin Pearson and Gloria Johnson joined the students in protesting. For that they were threatened with expulsion by the Republican majority in an unprecedented move by the MAGA Republicans. The Democrats had broken no laws, they had just peacefully protested.

Yet, in this state where the Ku Klux Klan was founded, where 50 years ago to the week Martin Luther King Jr., gave the final speech of his life, Pearson and Jones--both Black--were expelled. Johnson, who's white, was not. When asked by the media why she was spared, and not her colleagues, an angry Johnson said it "might have to do with the color of our skin."

Jones, in his final speech, pointed out Republicans didn't expel their own members for child molestation and domestic violence.

Pearson and Jones can run for their seats again in a special election. We must send them back to the state house, because Republicans cannot get away with racism and attacks on our democracy.
