Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has named California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) January Porker of the Month for proposing a state government takeover of the pharmaceutical industry. On January 10, Gov. Newsom announced a plan to make California the first state to create its own drug label to “control costs,” despite drug prices dropping for the first time in 45 years last year. CAGW President Tom Schatz said, “Gov. Newsom’s plan to have California create its own drug label is costly and dangerous. His concept shows a lack of basic economic understanding of how generic drug pricing works. If implemented, the proposal would limit patient access to life-saving drugs by causing shortages and destroying innovation. Forcing manufacturers to sell their drugs at the same price to everyone in the state won’t reduce high costs. Gov. Newsom’s drug price control plan is a prescription for disaster. California isn’t Costco, and generic drugs shouldn’t be treated as a Kirkland label.” For attempting to take over California’s prescription drug business, Gov. Newsom is the January Porker of the Month. Read more about the Porker of the Month.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez Voted 2019 Porker of the Year
CAGW has named Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) the 2019 Porker of the Year for introducing the “Green New Deal,” a plan that would bankrupt America, restrict individual freedom, and hand over vast amounts of power to the federal government. On February 7, 2019, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez introduced H. Res. 109, to recognize “the duty of the Federal Government to create a Green New Deal” through a “10-year national mobilization effort” to drastically remake the U. S. economy. The total cost of the proposal is $92 trillion, quadruple the current national debt of $23 trillion. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez “won” CAGW’s dubious distinction after receiving 54 percent of the vote a national online poll. The 2019 Porker of the Year silver medal winner, with 25 percent of the vote, is Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) for proposing “free” college and a taxpayer-funded bailout of all student loan debt. The other 2019 Porker of the Year nominees, in order of votes received, were: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), 16 percent; Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), 2 percent; Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), 2 percent; and Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.), 1 percent. Read more about the Porker of the Year.

From “The WasteWatcher”
On December 6, Presidential contender Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced a $150 billion broadband boondoggle, his latest in a long litany of new government spending programs, explains Deborah Collier, CAGW Vice President for Policy and Government Affairs on CAGW’s blog, “The WasteWatcher.” The latest Sanders spending scheme is more than 20 times costlier than President Obama’s $7.2 billion plan, which was already found to be a colossal waste of money. Sen. Sanders also announced his attention to tear apart high-speed internet companies and turn broadband internet as a new “basic human right.” Local governments already have a sordid history of running broadband utilities, all with the same result: services don’t improve, taxes increase, and the size of government swells. Instead of building broadband networks itself, the government should instead continue to reduce regulatory burdens on providers and increase access to funding, concludes Collier.
