Earth Day is April 22. It's a day I look forward to each year, inspiring hope for a new tomorrow. And it's because of this hope for a better tomorrow I founded Food & Water Watch over 17 years ago.
Thanks to you, we’re fighting for a livable climate by stopping new fossil fuel projects and industry schemes like carbon capture, protecting our food by banning factory farms, and keeping our water safe and affordable by ensuring our water systems stay under public control and out of corporate hands.
I want to share some of the amazing work we're doing at Food & Water Watch:
In Pennsylvania and Ohio: Following the Norfolk Southern train derailment in February, Food & Water Watch is working with community members to ensure residents get the necessary resources to test their air and water.
In New York: We are working to ban gas hookups in new buildings across the state. And, we're fighting to keep Holtec International, the multinational corporation tasked with decommissioning the Indian Point nuclear plant, from dumping radioactive waste in the Hudson River. Their proposal would endanger communities' drinking water and ecosystems along the river.
In California: We launched our new campaign to Protect California’s Water. Over a million Californians lack reliable access to clean drinking water, while big corporations guzzle down billions of gallons of water a year. We're mobilizing people across the state to demand Governor Newsom take action to end corporate water abuse by Big Ag and Big Oil.
Nationally: We sued the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for not responding to our petition in 2017 to overhaul the agency’s water pollution regulations for factory farms. Because of our lawsuit, EPA has committed to responding by August 15. Our petition demands that EPA adopt tighter water pollution standards for these dirty operations nationwide. This is the second Food & Water Watch lawsuit this year to successfully pressure EPA to scrutinize factory farm water pollution.
I am so proud of the work we do every day to build a livable future for all. Our food, water, and climate are under constant assault by corporations who put profit before the health of our communities and the planet. It’s only thanks to you that we can fight this Earth Day.
