On Friday evening, an anti-abortion federal circuit court judge in Texas issued a devastating ruling [[link removed]] in an effort to revoke the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of mifepristone - the first drug used in the two-step drug regime for a medication abortion [[link removed]] . This decision will not take effect until at least April 14, 2023 , pending the government’s appeal. Also, in a separate ruling, a federal judge in the state of Washington issued a preliminary injunction in a mifepristone case brought by 18 Attorneys General, including both DC and Maryland Attorneys General. For now, mifepristone remains protected and Planned Parenthood Advocates for DC, Maryland & NoVa (PPADMV) will continue to fight back against anti-abortion attacks.
The result of this Texas judge’s ruling would be a nationwide ban on mifepristone — even in states where abortion is legal, including DC, Maryland & Virginia.
This baseless ruling is part of a coordinated effort to ban abortion nationwide. While anti-abortion extremists and politicians have not stopped their assault on our reproductive freedom since the overturning of Roe v. Wade , PPADMV will never stop fighting for the reproductive freedom of people in DC, Maryland & NoVa.
