Hi John
Our oceans are in crisis. Overfishing, oil drilling, climate breakdown and plastic pollution are just some of the threats destroying our blue planet. But we can help protect them - and a strong Global Ocean Treaty is the way to do it. Can you urge your MP to tell the Prime Minister to show ambition and send a senior minister to the treaty negotiations to secure the ocean protection our blue planet needs? Right now, only 1% of our global oceans are protected. And the sea creatures that live there are at risk. Studies have shown that marine life is disappearing at twice the speed of life on land [1]. That’s just not something we’re willing to accept. A strong Global Ocean Treaty will allow governments to put huge areas of our oceans off-limits to destructive industries via a network of ocean sanctuaries - giving them much needed space to recover and thrive. And scientists say, to avoid the worst impacts of climate breakdown, we need to have 30% of our oceans protected in this way by 2030. A weak treaty won’t enable this scale of protection; it would be bad news for our oceans - and for us. The good news is that Boris Johnson has already publicly spoken about protecting our oceans - but words aren’t enough, we need action - and we need it now. Can you urge your MP to make sure Boris prioritises these negotiations and sends a senior minister to the upcoming talks so we get a strong Global Ocean Treaty? Getting 30% of the world's oceans protected by 2030 will be one of the biggest conservation efforts in history. This is the best chance we have at protecting our blue planet.
We need every voice, every name to make this a reality. Make sure you get you stand up for our oceans.
Thank you for everything you do,
