They keep taking away our rights.
Now they have succeeded in one of their most egregious nationwide attacks.
Late yesterday, Texas Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk suspended the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, an essential drug in medication abortion, setting up its instantaneous inaccessibility everywhere across the country in just 7 days -- even in states where voters have recently affirmed reproductive rights, such as Kansas and California.
We can stop the ban from going into effect, but there isn’t much time!
The FDA can use their Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) authority to make available medical countermeasures in a public health emergency and ensure access to mifepristone nationwide without interruption. Please sign on now.
For over 20 years, people have used mifepristone, along with another drug misoprostol, to safely and effectively end their pregnancies. Yet, for the first time in history, this ruling reverses the FDA's authority on drug regulation.
Unwanted, unplanned pregnancies can be life threatening or cause other major health complications; they can trap families in a multigenerational cycle of poverty with diminished opportunities for education and employment.
In addition data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shown that the United States has one of the highest maternal mortality rates among developed countries. The FDA must recognize this will only make maternal health worse and treat this situation as a public health crisis that demands urgent intervention.
By exercising all available emergency powers and restoring access to mifepristone, the FDA can help mitigate this public and human rights crisis. It can both uphold its mission to protect public health and ensure that individuals retain autonomy over their reproductive decisions.
The FDA must immediately intervene to protect women’s access to medication abortion. Tell them they must use all their emergency powers to maintain distribution and availability now!
The far right has planned for decades how to pull these rights away. Their goal, have no illusion, is the complete criminalization of abortion under any circumstances, even in cases of rape or incest, everywhere in the country, red or blue.
This is the first time in history that a judicial decision has overruled the FDA on regulating a drug. Thank you for helping make it the last.
