Dear friend,

As the Senior Director of Humanitarian Response at Mercy Corps, I wanted to take a moment to update you on the ongoing emergencies in Northwest Syria and in Ukraine.

At Mercy Corps, we understand the importance of mobilizing quickly to meet the immediate needs of the people most impacted — while also laying a foundation for recovery and lasting change.

In Northwest Syria, Ukraine, and wherever we provide humanitarian response, our team engages with the community to understand people’s biggest challenges, and builds partnerships with local organizations to deliver support.

Responding to growing need in Northwest Syria
Faten* receives an emergency kit from Mercy Corps. Her home was destroyed in the earthquake. She and her daughter now stay in a tent, enduring cold winter temperatures. (*Name changed for security.)
The situation in Northwest Syria continues to grow more dire. People are reporting they cannot afford food due to limited cash and increased prices. For many people, there is no choice but to drink contaminated water because of damage to water networks and latrines. More than 50,000 cholera cases have been reported in Northwest Syria in the last month.

Mercy Corps continues to distribute hygiene kits and shelter supplies, including solar lamps, jerrycans, blankets, mats, mattresses, and other essentials. We are also repairing damaged boreholes that supply clean water across camps for displaced people. We are deeply committed to this work and will not let Northwest Syria face disaster alone.

Partnering to get basic needs to civilians in Ukraine
Damaged buildings are a common sight in Hostomel’. This area, northwest of Kyiv, suffered from heavy fighting during the early days of the ongoing war.
Damage to civilian infrastructure has left people without heat, water, and communications in many parts of Ukraine. Mercy Corps has partnered with the government of Ukraine to support community centers that provide electricity, heat, water, first aid, and mobile communications when power outages occur.

We’re providing generators, heaters, and charging stations to these community centers, which, for many civilians, are the only places where they can warm up and charge their devices. We will continue to work with local partners to provide basic needs as we advocate for the protection of civilians.

The compassion and generosity of people like you, along with the determination of our team members and the communities we work with, are critical to helping people in Northwest Syria, Ukraine, and 40+ countries cope, adapt, and ultimately thrive after conflict and disaster.

As humanitarian need skyrockets around the world, we ask you to consider becoming a monthly donor — a Partner In Possibility — to help meet this need with an enduring commitment.
