Dear Friend,

I mean this seriously: our power lies with you.

Twenty million people poured into the streets for the first Earth Day in 1970, generating a tidal wave of environmental progress that led to the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Earthjustice was born in the midst of this movement, created to represent the environmental interests of our communities and planet in court.

Since our founding, Earthjustice has won more than 1,000 cases to protect the Earth and frontline communities. Your support makes this possible, and our strength still depends on you. And in years of economic hardship like this one, when fewer people have resources to give, our power is impacted too.

We are on pace to raise significantly less funding than last year, so a generous donor has offered a $2:$1 match for Earth Month. Please, if you are able, donate today, and give back to defend the planet that has given us everything we’ve got.

We are at a crucial point in history. Biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate, scientists are billing the latest IPCC report as a “survival guide for humanity,” and the right-wing supermajority on the Supreme Court is taking aim at the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. In the face of such peril, it is easy to feel powerless.

But in the 22 years I have worked at Earthjustice, I have never felt powerless. With 200 lawyers and 1,000 clients at my side, I feel the strength we wield through the power of the courts and through your support.

Here’s just a few of our recent victories:

- Arctic Oil Drilling: Legal pressure from Earthjustice helped stop the Peregrine oil drilling project — a carbon bomb in the making. Another Arctic oil project known as the Willow Project is under suit from Earthjustice right now.

- Toxic Mining Waste: In partnership with Alaska Native Communities, Earthjustice filed suit and won a decision to stop Pebble Mine — a massive mining operation that would have dumped toxic waste in Alaska’s Bristol Bay and endangered one of the largest Chinook salmon runs and a $2.2 billion fishing economy.

- Coal: Earthjustice represented tribal and conservation groups and won a federal court decision that halted the leasing of federal lands (roughly 247 million acres) for exploitation by coal companies.

- Electric USPS Mail Trucks: The United States Postal Service, bowing to an intense campaign of public pressure from groups including Earthjustice, announced that over half of its new fleet of mail vehicles will be powered by electricity.

- Frontline Communities Fighting Fossil Fuels: Earthjustice and community partners defeated plans to build two massive petrochemical complexes in St. James Parish, Louisiana, an area notoriously named “Cancer Alley” for its polluted air.

- California Spotted Owl: After 30 years of advocacy and litigation, the Fish and Wildlife Service finally agreed to list the southern/coastal region California spotted owl as endangered, and the Sierra region California spotted owl as threatened.

Our adversaries have huge amounts of money and political might. We have the facts, we have our partners, and we have you. That's how Earthjustice began at the dawn of the Earth Day movement, and that’s how we have managed to win in court, again and again, for decades.

The truth is, big change happens only when big, broad coalitions work together – when thousands of impassioned individuals, like you, join together and fight back.

That's how we build power: by sharing it.

This Earth Month, I am asking you to share what you can to keep our power strong. Join thousands of environmentalists and make a commitment to defend our Earth and our future together. MAKE AN EARTH MONTH DONATION: [link removed]

Abigail Dillen
