Dear John,

One of my favorite hymns for this season of Easter is

“Christ Jesus Lay in Death’s Strong Bands.”

Like all good hymns, it points us to God’s Word and truth. And what Christian truth is more important than this?

Christ Jesus lay in death’s strong bands,

for our offenses given;

but now at God’s right hand He stands

and brings us light from heaven.

Christ Jesus truly died - it was not a trick or a sham.

He really laid in the grave for three days, and his death really was atonement for our sin. We cannot atone for our own sin - we need Christ’s death to make us right with God, and Christ willingly offered himself as a sacrifice because of God’s love for us.

But that just brings us to Good Friday.

Jesus Christ did not stay dead

. On Easter Morning, He rose from the dead and triumphed over the grave. He was able to do this because He is both man and God, fully human and fully divine.

Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection give us life, and set us free from the tyranny of sin and death. For that reason, the resurrection is the center of our faith.

You and I have been changed by the power of Christ’s resurrection

. In our work and in our daily lives, we frequently encounter people who have not experienced God’s love, grace, and truth.

My prayer this Easter is that we would be a witness to God’s truth - to Christ’s resurrection and how it changes everything. My prayer is that Minnesota Family Council would do this in all areas of our work - politics, education, the courts, and our work with churches.

I pray that we will not be just another nonprofit pursuing its own goals and mission, but that our work and our witness would be transformed by the life-changing and world-changing truth that Jesus Christ rose from the dead to save us and to save our world.

That’s my prayer this Easter season!

Then let us feast this Easter day

on Christ, the bread of heaven;

the Word of grace has purged away

the old and evil leaven.

Christ alone our souls will feed;

he is our meat and drink indeed;

faith lives upon no other! Alleluia!
