Weekend Reading

Dear Friend,

Thank you to everyone who contacted their senators to end the 2002 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF)! The Senate recently voted to repeal this legislation that authorized the Iraq War. Now, we must keep up the pressure and urge the House to follow suit. Tell your representative: Repeal the 2002 AUMF today! [link removed]

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

Helping seniors living under blockade in Gaza: [link removed] A humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Gaza, with most residents relying on international assistance to survive. AFSC’s Mike Merryman-Lotze and Jennifer Bing share what that means for Palestinian elders—and how a new AFSC project aims to help.

Opinion: Lawmakers must say NO to xenophobic policies: [link removed] In New Hampshire, legislators have been considering multiple anti-immigrant measures, including an anti-sanctuary cities bill. “These policies will promote racial profiling, separate families, destabilize our communities, and further damage trust in local law enforcement,” write AFSC’s Maggie Fogarty and Grace Kindeke. Fortunately, on Thursday, state House members voted to stop a provision in the state budget that would have deputized local, county, and state police to engage in federal immigration enforcement. Engaging children and farmers in building a healthier food system: [link removed] Over the winter, AFSC’s New Mexico Program coordinated visits from local farmers to Head Start preschool programs. During the visits, children got to plant their own snap pea plants, handle farm tools, and pet a therapy goat, writes AFSC’s Angelina Lopez-Brody. The visits are part of AFSC’s ongoing efforts to bring more local food to Head Start and pre-K programs in the state. [link removed]

Defining a faithful Farm Bill to protect our climate (April 18, 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT): [link removed] Join AFSC and partners for the latest in our series of webinars on the Farm Bill. This month we’ll focus on advocating for a Farm Bill to address climate change. We’ll also discuss how faith communities can urge Congress to support a just, climate-conscious transition in our food system. Register today.
