A sharp sound, followed by body numbness. Difficulty speaking. Extreme head pain.

Since 2016, U.S. officials across the world – in Cuba, China and Russia – have reported experiencing the sudden onset of an array of eerie symptoms. This week on Reveal ([link removed]) , we are partnering with VICE World News and reporters Adam Entous and Jon Lee Anderson, who try to make sense of the confusing illness that has come to be called Havana syndrome.

The reporters begin by tracking down one of the first people to report Havana syndrome symptoms, a CIA officer working in Cuba. When the officer reports his illness to his bosses at the CIA, he learns that other U.S. officials on the island are experiencing the same thing. A CIA doctor sent to Havana to investigate the cause of the illness also falls ill with the same symptoms – the first night he is on the island.

Our After Ayotzinapa ([link removed]) podcast series, produced in partnership with the National Security Archive ([link removed]) , is the winner of Investigative Reporters and Editors’ 2022 Longform Journalism in Audio award.

Judges called the series an “extraordinary exploration of the forced disappearances of college students in Mexico filled with inside information, public records, critical relationships with sources, clear and compelling storytelling, archive audio, creative approaches, significant results, and a disturbing window into corruption in Mexico fueled by drug cartels.” The series “lands like a gut punch, holding powerful Mexican institutions and political figures to account,” the judges added.
