Fellow Conservative,

Tomorrow marks the celebration of Easter and follows the beginning of Passover. In light of this week’s religious holiday, Congress was in recess this week. When Congress returns on April 17th, they will continue debating two of the most important issues facing the current 118th Congress: federal spending and border security.

In January, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced that the U.S. began using “extraordinary measures” to ensure America could still pay its bills after Congress spent all the way up to the $31.4 trillion debt ceiling.

As the expiration date for those measures approaches, Congress is faced with the question of what to do about the debt limit and the current level of federal spending.

A simple investigation of the numbers makes one fact abundantly clear: The federal government does not have an income problem, it has a spending problem.

Federal revenue continues to increase, yet increases in federal spending outpace revenue leading to record levels of debt both in real and nominal terms.

Debt limit appears unlimited.jpg

This debt threatens the quality of life of every American as it creates inflationary pressures, discourages investing, generates uncertainty about the future, and contributes to shocking events such as the collapse of several American banks.

Now that the federal government has hit its borrowing limit, conservatives in Congress have important leverage to force President Biden to slow down spending. Congress must refuse to increase the debt ceiling until Biden agrees to making smart cuts to federal spending.

Heritage Action has created a toolkit to address this issue. It contains background information and an outline of the solutions that would set us on the right path to financial security.

Critically, Congress must hear from you! Your representatives need to know that you expect them to get the country’s fiscal health in order and not sell our future into debt.

>>> Call Congress and let them know they need to cut spending

The other critical fight will be over securing the border. In 2022, Republicans running for election to the House of Representatives made a commitment to the American people that they would pass a bill to secure the border. Now that the House has a Republican majority, it’s up to the grassroots to hold them accountable to keep their word.

There can be no question that the border crisis we face today is a direct result of Biden's policies and lack of leadership. But Congress cannot simply blame Biden and move on. Congress must take action!

The open southern border has brought with it a flood of fentanyl pouring into the country, an increase in human trafficking, and sex trafficking. This has all been intentional as the Biden administration has actively encouraged people to cross our open border and has aided in moving illegal immigrants throughout the country via NGOs and other organizations.

We should expect Congress to do its job and stand up for the American people.

Heritage Action has created a toolkit to steer the conversation and to offer concrete first steps to taking control of this crisis and strengthening the security of our country.

Congress is often pulled in many directions by special interests and outside pressure. But the only special interests they should be concerned about is you, the people. They must hear from you.

>>> Call your representatives and tell them that the border has been open for far too long and Americans must no longer pay the price for Congress’ indecision.

Heritage Action works to equip the grassroots to lead the fight for conservative policies in their communities, and what better way to do that than in person?

Illinois - Sentinel Coffee with Rep. Mary Miller

One of the ways Heritage Action helps to amplify the voice of the grassroots is to put them in direct contact with their representatives.
