This week, victims of the tragic 2017 Sutherland Springs church shooting received what was long overdue: justice.

More than five years ago, a gunman armed with an assault weapon entered the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, TX, and fired more than 450 rounds. In all, 26 people were killed and 22 others were injured.

The events of this day were horrific. But almost as painful is the knowledge that this incident could have been prevented. The government had failed to report the gunman’s history of violence into the
Brady Background Check system. Had that history been reported, the shooter would have been prevented from purchasing the murder weapon. But when a judge ordered the federal government to deliver justice to the victims and their families, the Justice Department appealed.

That’s why Brady took action, bringing together 40 partners to call on the Department of Justice to stop prolonging the victim’s insurmountable pain and suffering in the courtroom. And it worked. This week, the Department of Justice reached a settlement with victims and families, finally delivering the justice they rightfully deserved.

We know that the Brady Background Check system is a powerful tool to stop prohibited purchasers from buying guns. To date, it has blocked over 4.5 million transfers of firearms to prohibited purchasers, helping save countless lives. But its effectiveness relies on proper implementation and enforcement.

That’s why Brady is committed to strengthening and expanding the Brady Background Check system and ensuring those who have the power to keep guns out of the hands of individuals intent on doing harm, fulfill obligations and act as a first line of defense to prevent gun violence. But we can’t do this work without your help.

Join Our Efforts to Pass Life-Saving Policies in States Across the Country

As we all continue to grapple with recent mass shootings and the reality of everyday gun violence, Brady’s state policy team and grassroots activists are working across the nation to pass life-saving solutions. Gun violence is not inevitable — there are tangible solutions to stop this epidemic and protect our communities from living in fear.

This week, Brady was in Nevada [[link removed]] to testify in support of policies that address safety at the polls, hate-fueled violence, and access to semiautomatic firearms by young adults. Our efforts also continue in Colorado, where we expect a number of gun safety bills will soon head to the Governor’s desk. And in Maryland, Brady testified in support of a bill [[link removed]] to ensure those who carry firearms in public are properly vetted and trained — a response to the more than 85,000 concealed carry permit applications received by state police since the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision last summer.
