After three years of Trump’s ongoing assault on our federal judiciary, the courts have become an especially salient issue in the 2020 presidential election. To hear more from candidates about this critical issue, PFAW and other progressive advocacy groups co-sponsored the “We the People 2020” forum in Des Moines, Iowa. Held just days before the 10-year mark of the devastating Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United, the forum gave candidates a platform to focus on the need for democracy reform to address the dominance of big money in politics, as well as the assault on voting rights and the connection of these democracy issues to fair courts. Citizens United vs. FEC, handed down by the Supreme Court on January 21, 2010, has proven to be one of the most consequential decisions in our country’s recent history. A new report from PFAW takes a look at the harm the decision has had for our democracy, impact on progressive issues, and what strategies advocates are using to fight back. And just next week, the House will hold a hearing for the first time ever on the Democracy For All constitutional amendment that would overturn cases like Citizens United and allow Congress and the states to put an end to the unchecked spending in our elections. In a southern state once the home of the confederacy, Democrats now control the state legislature for the first time in decades. The victories enjoyed by progressives here have already resulted in the state's ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment and action on gun violence prevention, and have pending measures to address issues such as raising the minimum wage, strengthening voting rights, decriminalizing marijuana, and more. In a new op-ed in the Florida Sun Sentinel, former Tallahassee mayor and PFAW Senior Fellow Andrew Gillum outlines various ways that voter ID laws, voter purges and other voter suppression practices have been employed in key battleground states and urges progressives to take action to ensure that all voters have access to the ballot box.
