April 2023: Welcoming President Biden to the 5th District
Dear friend,
This week, I welcomed President Biden to Minnesota’s Fifth District to tour the Cummins Power Generation Facility in Fridley. This visit was part of his “Investing in America Tour” to highlight the investments his administration is making to address the climate crisis right here in Minnesota. This is Cummins' first electrolyzer manufacturing facility in the United States. It will produce electrolyzers, which create clean hydrogen energy that helps decrease carbon emissions and reduce our carbon footprint. I’m incredibly proud of our district for growing our clean energy economy in Minnesota and beyond. You can watch my remarks here.
Ramadan Update
I hope this period is filled with hope, reflection, and renewal. During the holy month of Ramadan, Congress must reaffirm that all people of faith should have the right to worship without fear. That is why I introduced a resolution to condemn Islamophobia, specifically commemorating the anniversary of the Christchurch Mosque Massacre and recent anti-Muslim attacks. You can read more here.
Delivering $3 Million to Roots Community Birth Center and Simpson Community Shelter
Community project funding is one the best ways to deliver meaningful investments across our district. Recently, I delivered checks to both Roots Community Birth Center and Simpson Community Shelter, totaling $3.1 million. These two projects are part of the fifteen projects for which our office secured funding last December. The funding for Simpson Community Shelter will be used to re-develop emergency shelter buildings to ensure they can continue offering safe shelter operations. Second, the Roots Community Birth Center funding will be used to improve their current space and help address health inequities, specifically aimed at addressing black maternal health disparities. I can’t wait to see how these investments will benefit members of our community.
Hosting Senior Town Hall
I hosted a town hall with senior residents at Walker Methodist with Minnesota House Majority Leader Jamie Long. We discussed our legislative work both in Washington and the State Capitol. You can watch a livestream video of the town hall here.
Feeding our Kids in Minnesota
School meals are now universal in Minnesota! Our state is leading the way to ensure no child goes hungry and all students receive the nutrition they need to succeed. On the federal level, I will keep fighting to build on the success in Minnesota and provide universal school meals to every child across the country.
Meeting with Snow Plow Drivers
I met with snow plowers from Minnesota’s Department of Transportation to learn about the work they do to keep our communities’ roads safe. During my visit, I got to ride in the “Blizzo'' snowplow, named after Lizzo. This snowplow was the winner of this year’s annual snowplow name contest. I am so grateful to our MNDOT’s staff who work so hard to keep our roads clean and clear. You can watch a recap of my visit here.
Hosting Minnesota Public Officials
I met with City Councils Members from Edina, St. Louis Park and Minneapolis. We discussed how to strengthen the continued partnership between federal and city governments. Afterwards, I hosted a reception for Minnesota city officials and discussed our legislative priorities.
Celebrating Minnesota Legislative Victories
Next, I met with Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan to discuss the legislative victories our state has achieved to transform the lives of Minnesotans. From universal school meals, to vote restoration and drivers’ licenses for all, we’re showing the country what Minnesota nice values are all about.
Fighting to End Gun Violence
Following the horrific shooting in Tennessee, I joined my colleagues to call for real gun reform. More Americans have been killed from gun violence than have died in all our wars combined. It is simply unacceptable we continue to accept this mass carnage. I will keep fighting until Congress eradicates gun violence once and for all.
