Let’s talk about the South.

I just got back from Alabama, where Trey and I spent the week meeting with organizers from across the South, from Florida to South Carolina to Tennessee . It was a fantastic convening of grassroots leaders and funders like Groundwork that are deeply invested in developing a collective, long-term Southern power-building strategy.

As you can imagine, the news coming out of Tennessee yesterday was a major point of discussion and focus. Being in this room, with multiple Tennessee organizers actively communicating and working with those on the ground as two Black Democratic representatives were expelled from the statehouse, was a sharp reminder about why our work together is so important.

The actions of the Tennessee GOP yesterday were racist and undemocratic. They set a terrifying new precedent for conservative efforts to undermine democracy in Republican-held statehouses across the country.

And they made crystal clear what you’ve heard us say over and over: Groundwork’s regions are the real battlegrounds of our time, the frontlines in the fight for our democracy.

What we’re witnessing in Tennessee, and in Groundwork states like Alabama and Mississippi, is proof of how deeply progressive organizers across the region deserve resources and support; the stakes are too high, and they have been holding the line on their own for too long.

You can join us and support progressive organizers in the regions where the fight for our democracy will be won or lost by donating now.

Founded by Joe Kennedy III, Groundwork Project invests in year-round, local community organizing in places Democrats have gotten used to writing off. With a focus on Appalachia, the Deep South, and the Plains, we support local advocates and activists working to build durable political infrastructure and secure power for those historically excluded.
