John,

In February, I wrote a letter to rail companies BNSF and Union Pacific demanding they work with the U.S. Department of Transportation to prevent trail derailments like the East Palestine disaster from happening in New Mexico. Hundreds of you joined me and signed on in support.

Well, I have an update. This week, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg joined me in Deming to announce a $45 million grant to improve rail safety.

Rail plays a critical role in New Mexico’s economy: one metric ton of chemical cargo travels across our state every year. It’s imperative that goods continue to move safely and efficiently across our state, which is why I called on the DOT and the rail companies to act.

In his first visit to the district, Secretary Buttigieg also highlighted federal investments to New Mexico’s roads, safe drinking water, and affordable energy thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act (which far-right Rep. Yvette Herrell voted against).

We’re already making progress and bringing federal attention to the concerns and well-being of our district. Help me continue to fight for NM-02 in Congress by chipping in $10 or more to my re-election campaign today.
