Howdy Texan –

I hope you have a great weekend surrounded by family and friends for Easter. I had a busy week working in the district and wanted to take a moment to update you!

ON THE DOCKET:

  • Supporting Local Education
  • The School Security Enhancement Act
  • The Sasser Family
  • Carter A-Lister Award Deadline Coming Up

THE BRIEF:

  •  The Chinese spy balloon that flew across the U.S. was able to gather intelligence from several sensitive American military sites.
  • Texas General Land Office granted the state’s Department of Public Safety agents access to patrol several acres of islands in the Rio Grande where migrants and cartels hide.
  • About three-quarters of Americans say inflation has caused them hardship over the last six months.

SUPPORTING LOCAL EDUCATION

The learners of today are the leaders of tomorrow, and it is imperative that our youngest Texans receive the best education possible. I met with leaders from Killeen ISD to discuss federal impact aid, teacher shortages, and the Department of Education. I'm committed to ensuring our students have the resources they need to succeed. I appreciate all that KISD does for our military families from Ft. Hood and all of the other students they serve selflessly.

THE SCHOOL SECURITY ENHANCEMENT ACT

The tragic events in Nashville reinvigorated the need for passable bipartisan solutions to keep our children safe in school. I have reintroduced the School Security Enhancement Act in the House, and my friend and colleague Senator Ted Cruz has reintroduced the companion bill in the Senate. This legislation gives local schools access to federal funding for physical security infrastructure. This bill also puts strong emphasis on listening to educators and gives schools the autonomy to do what is best for their campuses, instead of a one-size-fits-all approach.

THE SASSER FAMILY

This week, I connected with the Sasser family. Their 3 year old son, Sam, was diagnosed with Monoamine Oxidase A (MOA/A) deficiency . Last year, I worked with them to secure language in legislation to investigate connections between this rare disease and veterans suffering with certain ailments like PTSD. I enjoyed seeing Sam and his family to learn more about their journey advocating for additional research.

CARTER A-LISTER AWARD DEADLINE COMING UP!

The deadline for the Carter A-Lister Award is just around the corner on April 11th. The A-Lister Award recognizes excellent TX-31 middle and high school students from private, public, and home schools that have demonstrated measurable community service. Nominees must have performed good deeds that benefited others on campus or in the community. If you know an outstanding student, click here to learn more about the award and nominate them!

As always, thank you for taking the time to stay updated on what's happening in Texas' 31st congressional district. Follow my Facebook and Twitter accounts for more updates.

It is an honor and privilege to represent you and Texas in the United States House.

Sincerely,
John R. Carter
