UPCOMING EVENTS
We are one week away from our 22nd Annual Update Conference and Gala Awards Reception ([link removed]) on Friday, April 14, 2023!

The Annual Update will kick off with a free half-day conference, Contested Truths: LGBTQ Research in the Age of Misinformation. Attend the conference in person at UCLA School of Law or stream it online. The conference will include three panel discussions and a keynote address delivered by Ari Waldman, Professor of Law and Computer Science at Northeastern University, that looks at the impact of misinformation on the civil rights of LGBTQ people. The conference will be followed by the final round of our moot court competition.

On the evening of April 14, join us for our Gala Awards Reception and Founders Dinner. We have some incredible honorees this year. We are recognizing Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi with our Lifetime Impact Award, as well trailblazing researcher Jessica Xavier, whose work launched community-based transgender research, and Latham & Watkins, LLC, for their consistent support of the Williams Institute—and of the legal rights of LGBTQ people more broadly.

Please visit our website ([link removed]) for a complete schedule. We hope to see you there!

NEW RESEARCH

** New report provides ways to support and affirm LGBTQI+ youth
------------------------------------------------------------
On March 31, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released a landmark report ([link removed]) that provides new resources to parents, teachers, and mental health providers to help them use evidence-based practices to affirm and support transgender and LGBTQI+ youth and their families.

The report relied on guidance from a multidisciplinary team of experts—including Renberg Senior Scholar and Legal Director Christy Mallory ([link removed]) . The report provides details on helpful and harmful interventions for LGBTQI+ youth in clinical, community, family, and school settings. For instance, it finds conclusive scientific evidence that affirming LGBTQI+ youth, and particularly transgender youth, is vital to protecting their mental health. It underscores that access to gender-affirming care improves the well-being of transgender youth and clearly asserts that conversion therapy is harmful, not supported by credible evidence, and should never be practiced.
