Like people across the country, I have been both heartbroken and outraged by what has been happening in Tennessee. Following the deaths of six people in a shooting at school, Tennessee residents went to their legislators with a message that it is time—past time—to do more to keep people safe from gun violence plaguing their communities, as it is communities across the country. Three of their legislators joined them in protest. Now two of those three legislators—the two young black representatives—have been expelled from the Tennessee legislature for doing so.
This anti-democratic action is not only an outrage; it is a warning. Threats to our democracy are real. Our response must be, too.
That is one reason I am proud that our campaign will be participating in Democracy Summer.
What is Democracy Summer? Founded by my dear friend and colleague Rep. Jamie Raskin, Democracy Summer seeks to bring about political change in America by training and deploying the next generation of Democratic organizers and leaders to win elections at every level. This fellowship teaches high school and college students state-of-the-art tactics in voter registration and political organizing, the dynamic history of political and social change in our country, and essential lessons for political leadership. We will have a Democracy Summer team here in Houston for an on-the-ground and virtual program to connect our fellows with leaders across the country.
If you know anyone who might be interested in a summer fellowship with #TeamLizzie, please share this link to apply before the April 14 priority deadline!
