TAKE ACTION TODAY: Tell Albany to Pass Bills That Save New Yorkers Money & Combat Climate Change
Fellow New Yorkers:
Governor Hochul and the New York State legislature are still negotiating the budget for 2023-24, and that gives us time for one last push for legislation that will advance climate justice while reducing our energy bills!
Do you have a minute to make sure New York State acts on climate?
We invite you to call the following:
Governor Kathy Hochul: 518-474-8390, Press "3," and then "2" to be connected to someone in Hochul’s office or "1" to leave a message Speaker of the New York State Assembly Carl Heastie: 518-455-3791 Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins: 212-298-5585 (or 914-423-4031 or 518-455-2585 in case her voicemail gets full)
And let him know that there are three critical bills we need to include in the state's 2023-24 budget:
NY HEAT Act (S.2016/A.4592) saves ratepayers the expense of unnecessary gas infrastructure and lowers energy bills, capping them at 6 percent of household income for environmental justice communities. Build Public Renewables Act (S.4134/A.279) enables the New York Power Authority, the nation’s largest publicly owned power provider, to build renewable energy sources that will lower energy bills. All-Electric Building Act (S.562A/A.920A) ensures that new buildings will be built to be all-electric, so there will be no need to use fossil fuels in the future.
We even drafted a script you can use, though we encourage you to use your own words:
"Hi, my name is _____, and I’m calling to urge you to support climate legislation that will help us meet the emission reduction targets of the CLCPA while helping reduce energy costs for all New Yorkers, especially communities of color who spend a disproportionate amount of their household income on their energy bills. This includes the New York HEAT Act, the Build Public Renewables Act, and the All-Electric Building Act. New York can continue to lead the nation on climate while reducing energy costs with smart bills like these!"
Thank you for your action. And if we don’t see you at Saturday’s Membership Meeting, have a great weekend!
