I know how important the value of an education is. Growing up, my family lived paycheck to paycheck. But I worked hard to put myself through college with part-time jobs and student loans — and thanks to that hard work and a lot of luck, I made the American Dream work for me. 

Now, I want to ensure all New Jersey students have the same opportunities I did. That’s why I’m proposing historic investments in education in my proposed budget. 

We’re going to expand free pre-K, invest in our teachers and school staff, and make higher education more affordable. With your support, we can get all this done and more, without a cent of new taxes. (In fact, I’m proposing record levels of tax relief to help working families and the middle class!)

Education is a key tool to ensuring you can do better than your parents and your children can do better than you. That’s why this budget includes:

• Almost a billion dollar increase in direct aid for the state’s K-12 public schools, for a total of almost $11 billion straight to our schools.
• An additional $109 million for pre-K aid to advance my goal of universal pre-K statewide.
• Over $20 million in investments and support for our educators and school staff, including new stipends, grants, certification fee waivers, training, and commitments to diversity. 
• Expansions in eligibility for the “College Promise” programs, so students with family incomes up to $100,000 can participate, as well as increases in the value of Tuition Aid Grants for over 20,000 students.
