Governor Whitmer Header
Dear Friend,
In the first 100 days of 2023, we have been getting things done to make a real difference in people’s lives. I want to highlight the record investments we have made together to build more housing. If we keep working together to grow our economy and build up our communities, we can build a brighter future for Michigan.
Sincerely,
Governor Whitmer
Gretchen Whitmer

April is Fair Housing Month
Michigan must be a place where everyone can afford to live, work, and raise a family. That's why I declared April as Fair Housing Month. The law requires fair housing opportunities for every Michigander, regardless of religion, race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, marital status, and familial status. I will continue to work to provide fair and equal housing opportunities for all.
supplemental bill
Earlier this year, I signed an executive order [ [link removed] ] that will help us move faster on housing projects and reach the goals of our state’s first-ever Statewide Housing Plan [ [link removed] ]:
* Build or rehabilitate *75,000 housing units*.
* Stabilize housing for *100,000 families*.
* Weatherize and improve energy efficiency for *15,000 homes*.
* Make homelessness rare, brief, and nonrecurring.
We have started to make progress and will continue to make more. In January, we awarded grants to build or improve 70 [ [link removed] ]0 affordable housing units [ [link removed] ] across Michigan, including projects in: Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Spring Lake, and Three Rivers. Together, we will keep working to meet our goals and build a brighter future for anyone who calls Michigan home.

Record Investments to Build Housing
Earlier this year, I signed a bipartisan bill [ [link removed] ] that makes meaningful investments to build more affordable housing across the state and fund community revitalization projects. The bill invests in our:
* Housing and Community Development Fund, which will build or refurbish 2,000 housing units, house 6,000 Michiganders, and create 1,600 good-paying construction jobs. The fund prioritizes projects offering veterans, seniors, people with disabilities, and working-class families safe, affordable places to call home.
* Revitalization and Placemaking Grants, which make towns more vibrant, converting underutilized property—like old factories or schools—into housing, small businesses, or community spaces that people can enjoy.
* Missing Middle program, which specifically builds housing for middle-class families and ensures people have the chance to live where they want to and be close to work.
These investments will ensure that Michiganders have a safe and affordable place to call home and that we can address the state’s housing crisis in the years to come.

Statewide Housing Partnership
We must work together to tackle Michigan’s housing challenges head-on. That’s why we created the Statewide Housing Partnership. [ [link removed] ] They are working to get our Statewide Housing Plan going and make sure we are on track to reach our goals of building more affordable housing, lowering costs, and addressing economic, racial, and geographic inequities. I am proud to have appointed the talented members of this Partnership and I am excited to get to work to make a real difference in people’s lives and improve our communities.
