Dear neighbor,

This week, former President Donald Trump was arraigned in New York. This is a very somber and serious time for our country. In a democracy, the law applies to everyone, from ordinary people to the rich and powerful. Throughout his trial, Donald Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence just like any other American. Now is the time to step back and let the legal system do its job without any sort of political interference. I joined Ayman Mohyeldin on MSNBC earlier in the week to talk about what this means for America, and what Democrats are doing to help American families. Watch the full interview below.

While House Democrats will always put People Over Politics, it’s clear that extreme MAGA Republicans prioritize political stunts over problem solving. House Democrats are taking on special interests to lower costs for working families, from driving down the price of prescription drugs to making clean energy options more affordable. We are investing in America to fix our nation’s infrastructure, deliver clean drinking water, and bring high-speed internet to every community. Congress should be focused on solving real problems. Instead, extreme MAGA Republicans are planning to gut Social Security and Medicare, trying to ban abortion nationally with no exceptions, and holding hearings complaining about Twitter. House Democrats are committed to delivering safer communities, lower costs, and better-paying jobs for American families.

Here’s what else I’ve been up to this week:

  • Discussed recent developments in our fight against gun violence with Stephanie Ruhle on MSNBC. I’m so proud of the young activists leading this charge in Tennessee and around the country. We must take action to address gun violence in our nation.
  • Responded to the Republican effort to ban all abortion after six weeks in Florida. Democrats will always defend reproductive freedom.
  • Joined Morning Joe to talk about Finland joining NATO, President Trump’s arraignment, and the need for responsible regulation of artificial intelligence. Check it out here.

HAPPY TRAILS! Please make sure that your passport is up to date! Processing times for passport renewals have increased recently due to normal seasonal demand. Standard processing times are now ten to thirteen weeks, while expedited processing time has risen to seven to nine weeks. If you need to apply for a new passport in person, please click here. If you have a passport that will expire within six months and need to renew it via mail, or if you need to correct or change your current passport, please click here. If you’ve already applied for a new or renewed passport and would like to check the status of your request, please click here.

My office has been fielding an increased number of requests for passport renewal or support. The State Department is processing a record number of passport applications, and appointments for emergency passports are harder to obtain due to very high demand. If your passport has one year or less of validity, please visit the State Department’s website to renew your passport or call my Los Angeles office.

For more information on my work in Congress, please visit my website at lieu.house.gov and follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our D.C. office at (202) 225-3976 or our Los Angeles district office at (323) 651-1040.

I look forward to updating you again soon.

Sincerely,

Ted W. Lieu
