Dear Friend,
“BREAKING: Kansas Republicans have successfully overridden the Governor veto to now authorize genital inspections of children in order for kids to play sports. A very dark & disturbing day.”
Talk about government overreach. The news out of Kansas is simply shameful. Because the Kansas state legislature overrode the Governor’s veto, adults can now demand that children who wish to play in school sports must undergo genital inspection. How many different ways can we traumatize children?
Sadly, legislation similar to Kansas almost happened right here in Virginia. This past session, multiple bills were presented in the General Assembly that attempted to write discriminatory, bigoted language into our Code. And many were presented under the guise of “parents’ rights.”
Well, I’ve heard from plenty of parents who are horrified about the attacks on their children and loved ones. Parents who care deeply about the emotional and physical health of their children. Parents who have every right to care for their children and seek out the advice of trained physicians and counselors. These parents and their children experience trauma every time these bills are presented.
Fortunately, this session, Virginia’s Senate Democrats were able to defeat harmful bills that target vulnerable trans children.
Unfortunately, the other side will try again, and we have no choice but to hold our majority in the Senate. Right now, the margin is slim. I am fighting hard to keep my seat and to keep the majority so that we can prevent harmful legislation from passing.
I promise you that I will continue to stand up and fight for our values and our Commonwealth.
To do that, I need your help.
If you don’t want to see Virginia become Kansas, please, give what you can. Any little bit helps.
