Friend:
At NILC, we believe everyone in the U.S should be able to live with dignity, no matter how much money we have, the color of our skin, or where we were born.
For more than 40 years we have leveraged our unparalleled expertise to advance the rights of low-income immigrants and their loved ones in court and in the halls of Congress. We champion the voices and stories of our communities to create a society where we all have the freedom to thrive.
Thanks to the generous support of our donors in 2022, NILC led the way in achieving important victories for immigrant communities and we are entering 2023 with the same unrelenting commitment.
Fighting Against Worker Exploitation
We won an unprecedented class settlement in a case on behalf of Latinx workers whose civil rights were violated in what was, at the time, the largest worksite raid in nearly a decade. In 2018 DHS (Department of Homeland Security) and IRS (Internal Revenue Service) agents illegally targeted and detained workers at a meat processing plant in Tennessee, subjecting them to racial profiling and excessive force. The historic settlement will provide over $1 million for the workers.
Restoring Immigrants’ Access to Health Services
We celebrated a major milestone in our six-year effort to push back on the Trump administration's heinous efforts to block immigrant families from accessing health and public benefit programs. The Biden administration’s regulations on "public charge" went into effect in December making it possible for low-income immigrants to seek health care and economic supports without fear of jeopardizing their immigration status.
Justice for Asylum Seekers
As a member of the Orantes class action lawsuit, we recently reunited our client and her young son with their relatives in Maryland after they were wrongfully deported to El Salvador. Our client and her son will now have a fair chance to pursue their asylum claims in the United States.
Protection for Immigrant Youth
One of NILC’s top priorities remains doing everything in our power to fight alongside hundreds of thousands of immigrant youth whose home is here. With nine states asking a federal judge to strike down DACA and taking us one step closer to the potential end of the program, we are calling on Congress to deliver a permanent solution. No matter what happens in the courts or in Congress, we won’t stop until there is a pathway to citizenship for immigrant youth.
Shifting the narrative to change hearts and minds
In recognition of our narrative and culture change work, NILC and our partner, Resilience Force, received a 2022 Anthem Award for Human and Civil Rights for our #ImmigrantsAreEssential narrative project. This global award recognized our efforts to build power for positive and inclusive narratives about the vital role that immigrants play in our country.
Friend, you can help advance more wins like these by making a tax-deductible donation. Your gift today will help sustain NILC’s work to secure justice for low-income immigrants in 2023 and beyond. Together, we can create a better future for immigrant communities everywhere.
