We know the majority of news coverage earlier this week may have told a different story, but the urgent fights happening across the states and at the Supreme Court right now are too important to be overlooked.

Efforts to restrict trans rights, abortion care, and other fundamental freedoms that impact our lives and safety continue to surge through state legislatures.

But we at the ACLU, our nationwide affiliate network, and all of our coalition partners are unwavering in this fight: We will not back down when it comes to protecting people's rights.

Here's what to know about just some of the key developments out of the states this week – and thank you for being part of our steadfast community in the fight for all of us.

At the Supreme Court, we secured a win for trans youth in sports →

• Yesterday, the Supreme Court rejected an effort by West Virginia to block a 12-year-old transgender girl from continuing to participate in school sports with her peers in our ongoing case filed alongside the ACLU of West Virginia and Lambda Legal. And in Indiana and across the states, we continue the fight for trans people's rights →

• On Wednesday, we filed a lawsuit against the state of Indiana over their ban on providing or even referring trans youth for gender-affirming care.

  And to be absolutely clear: This fight is happening across the nation. It is urgent we all are paying attention and pushing back as often as we can. Indiana is the latest filing in our efforts to protect trans people from these attacks. But the ACLU has also made clear in Idaho, Montana, Oklahoma, and Tennessee that we will take legal action should any anti-trans bills in these states move forward – as have our ACLU affiliates in Georgia, Kentucky, and Utah. Meanwhile, in Tennessee, we're advocating for free speech and the right to protest →

• On April 4, members of the Tennessee House of Representatives brought resolutions to expel three representatives from the state legislature without due process – after these lawmakers chanted along with people gathered in the balcony to protest gun policies. The House of Representatives voted to expel Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, both Black men, while the motion to expel Rep. Gloria Johnson, a white woman, failed by a single vote.

  This extreme measure stripped Tennessee voters of representation by the people they elected. That is why the ACLU of Tennessee alongside countless organizers and coalition groups mobilized people across the state to speak out against these expulsions. Read more

Finally, in Idaho and nationwide, we're defending abortion access relentlessly →

• On Wednesday, we filed a lawsuit against the Idaho Attorney General for threatening health care providers who exercise their First Amendment right to give patients information about out-of-state abortion care.

  This is the latest in the attack on reproductive freedom and our constitutional right to free speech as it relates to abortion care. We're also fighting back against lawmakers in Iowa and Texas who introduced bills that restrict access to information on abortion care online. ACLU Supporter, politicians coming for abortion care, trans people's rights, and free speech have a clear agenda: They want to limit our freedom – and they will not stop here.
