Team,
These are just a couple of the disturbing headlines we’ve seen recently involving Supreme Court justices. While I will wait until we have all the facts about particular Justices, it is pretty clear that we need a basic code of ethics for members of the Supreme Court right now.
These justices are unelected and serve lifetime terms, yet they’re subject to little to no ethical guardrails. The result? In many cases, they are able to accept gifts and vacations from people who have interests before the Court, they don’t have to recuse themselves from cases they might have conflict with, and there’s no process to submit an ethics complaint at the Court.
That’s why I’ve sponsored legislation to require the Supreme Court to hold itself to a basic code of ethics. The Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal and Transparency (SCERT) Act would strengthen disclosure requirements for justices so we know what special interests are lobbying before the Court, and require judges to be recused from cases where an involved party spent significant funds to get them confirmed.
Add your name to call on Congress to pass our SCERT Act and implement basic accountability and transparency for the Supreme Court. [link removed]
It’s pretty simple: Supreme Court justices should have to abide by a basic code of ethics. Passing my bill would be a step in the right direction to restoring public trust and confidence in the Supreme Court.
