Care work is the work that makes all other work possible. I say that not just as a former direct care worker, but also someone who has family members who rely on direct care workers every day. Now, it’s official – care workers are getting the recognition they deserve. President Biden has declared April to be Care Worker Recognition Month.
Care workers deserve so much more than our recognition – they deserve our appreciation and promise to fight for better conditions and wages with them. Care workers are at the frontlines of the care crisis. Care workers, predominantly Black women and women of color, wake up every morning and demonstrate their commitment to the families they care for. They do so in spite of difficult working conditions – often performing unacknowledged and unpaid work, engaging in painful physical and emotional labor and working long hours.
Last week, the White House declared April to officially be Care Worker Recognition Month, thanks to the advocacy of our partners at the National Domestic Workers Alliance and SEIU. Now, we all need to come together to show how much we appreciate care work and why we all must join the fight for care workers.

Care connects us all and makes all other work possible. We will all need, provide, or receive care at some point in our lives, and often at the most unexpected moments. It’s time for us all to show our support for the care workers who care for all of us.
