Know Your Child's Religious Rights!

As you celebrate Easter week, we want to remind you that Texas law protects your religious freedom at school and Texas Values is constantly fighting on your behalf to safeguard your First Amendment rights.

In previous years, controversy has erupted due to concerns that certain Texas school districts would not give excused absences to students who were observing Good Friday.

There have been attempts in the past by schools to make Good Friday an official "make-up" day for their school districts, or have requested documentation of how a student might choose to exercise their holy day observance before agreeing to excuse them.

Texas law requires that schools provide an "excused" absence for students that observe a religious holy day, like Good Friday. However, Texas law does not say that a child must attend a specific religious event.

On Good Friday we remember the sacrifices Jesus made on our behalf when he willingly suffered and went to the cross to save us from our sins. (Isaiah 53:5). It’s a somber remembrance, but there is joy in knowing that death could not hold Him.
