Friend – For five years, our podcast Speaking Freely With the ACLU of Pennsylvania has been the place to hear conversations about the latest civil liberties issues in the Commonwealth. After an eight-month hiatus, the podcast is back with a series of episodes on policing, marijuana legalization, and the right to vote. In the midst of campaigns for mayor and city council in Philadelphia, some candidates have raised the idea of escalating police use of stop-and-frisk of pedestrians. Philly tried stop-and-frisk. It failed. And we know because ACLU-PA has been doing the work. Since 2011, we've been enforcing a settlement against the city to end the Philadelphia police department's illegal stops and frisks of pedestrians, a practice that has disproportionately impacted Black Philadelphians. Since the candidates are talking about it, we're talking about it. Our latest episode of Speaking Freely just launched, and it's a conversation with former ACLU-PA Deputy Legal Director Mary Catherine Roper, ACLU-PA Community Ambassador Yahaira Galarza, and the Reverend Mark Tyler of Power. Check out the episode on your favorite podcast app or listen on our website. In the weeks ahead, we'll be publishing new episodes with cartoonist Brian Brown, the creator of Legalization Nation, in honor of 4/20, and with ACLU-PA's Marian Schneider and Khalif Ali of Common Cause PA about advocating for a pro-voter agenda, just ahead of the 2023 primary election. Happy listening! And be free… In liberty, Andy Hoover |
