Stephen Donnelly announces 8,500 abortions last year (http://)
In a remarkable radio interview on Tuesday afternoon, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly made the impromptu announcement that 8,500 women “availed of abortion services” in 2022. This admission came on foot of the accusation by one of his three-year review “experts” that the abortion system was close to collapse. Donnelly, quick to correct the record, pointed out what we already know to be true – that Ireland’s abortion regime is firmly entrenched and has had a devastating impact.

8,500 lives lost last year to abortion is a breathtakingly high number. It completely upends the ridiculous claims from the yes campaign in 2018 that legalising abortion in Ireland would not see an increase in the abortion rate. Last year, one in eight pregnancies ended in abortion. This is the result of a government which has shown a complete lack of interest in providing women in unplanned pregnancies with real alternatives to abortion. We know that most abortions are caused by socioeconomic factors. A total of approximately 28,500 abortions (comparable to the population of Kilkenny city) in just four years is symptomatic of government failure across the board to provide families with the basic confidence and supports required to raise a child in Ireland today.

The startling figure of 8,500 abortions last year puts paid to the idea that freedom of conscience for doctors is inhibiting the abortion regime in Ireland. The devastatingly high numbers of lives ended by abortion shows there is no problem with access; the problem lies with the complete lack of positive alternatives for women.
New evidence of babies aborted following false diagnosis of life-limiting conditions (http://)

A reply to a parliamentary question (PQ) asked by Deputy Peadar TĂłibĂn has revealed that 133 claims have been reported to the State Claims Agency arising from adverse incidents related to legal abortions from 1 January 2019 to 28 February 2023. This includes two cases of babies who were aborted following a diagnosis of a foetal abnormality.

The Baby Christopher case in Holles Street hospital has already been highlighted in the media. But this recent revelation shows how this disturbing case was not a once off. Of course all babies have a right to life whether they have a life limiting condition or are perfectly healthy, but it is particularly galling to learn of two cases of abortion resulting from misdiagnoses. We know the hardship this causes parents. It is the unfortunate product of a medical system which places no value in unborn human life.

The 133 cases of adverse incidents are a tragic indictment of Ireland’s abortion regime. Injustices are happening which are not being properly examined or counteracted. The progressing three-year review has been silent on such matters, instead most of the rhetoric surrounding it in the media and from the Minister for Health himself has focused on how to make the abortion regime more “accessible”. The Pro Life Campaign has urged the government to create robust system where adverse events can be dealt with quickly and properly. This could be under the aegis of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA), which would require amending the Health Act 2007 to empower HIQA to investigate any adverse events that occur in the course of or in connection with the operation of the 2018 abortion law.
Pro-abortion wish list features on Irish Times front page for second week in a row (http://)

For the second week in a row, abortion has featured on the front page of the Irish Times. Unfortunately, the stories have not been ones shining a light on the grisly impact of the abortion law such as cases of misdiagnoses or of alarming indications that babies were born alive. Instead, the Irish Times on Monday 3 April featured hyperbolic comments from Dr Deirdre Duffy, one of Minister Donnelly’s pro-abortion brain trust, that the entire abortion system was in danger of “collapse”.

Ms Duffy highlighted how doctors exercising freedom of conscience was endangering the abortion apparatus. She also appeared to complain how her research will not appear in the eventual three-year review report, which has been made available to Minister Donnelly already. A clear pro-abortion demand to emerge from the review is the erosion of freedom of conscience for doctors, a very regressive step which would aim to see pro-life doctors either compelled to perform life-ending abortions against their will or alternatively to force them out of the medical profession.

Last week, the Irish Times ran a front-cover story which attacked the three-day waiting period. It failed to explain how the three-day waiting period has played a role in providing women with a vital time for reflection. Nearly 4,000 women who made an initial abortion appointment failed to follow it up with the final and second appointment, in the years 2019 to 2021 inclusive.

True to form, the Irish Times has recently been giving excessive front-page coverage to the supposed “problems” with the abortion law being “restrictive”. This one-sided coverage is clearly not interested in an honest and open debate on the impact of Ireland’s abortion laws. The most recent revelations about the huge spike in the Irish abortion numbers illustrate that a fresh debate is needed, and that pro-life perspectives are urgently needed.

Ireland’s commonsense three-day abortion waiting period is under attack

During its campaign to repeal the Eighth Amendment in 2018, the government adopted a number of restrictions on the proposed new abortion regime in order to reassure the public, and many Ministers including then-Tánaiste Simon Coveney, that the Irish abortion system would not be a free for all. One of the key measures they announced was the three-day reflection period between an initial consultation with a GP and the carrying out of an abortion, which was designed to allow women the time and space to reflect on their decision.

Do you have pro-life material which could be historically relevant? ()
We are putting out a call for anyone in possession of any documents, photographs, correspondence, etc. relevant to the Irish pro-life movement throughout the decades. We are particularly keen to receive anything in your possession related to periods such as the 1983 referendum. A comprehensive history of the pro-life movement is yet to be written, but the historians of the future will need primary sources. We are asking for people to get in touch with the Pro Life Campaign (mailto:[email protected]) if they possess such material (no matter how old or dusty!) to ensure it is preserved now and not lost to the ages.
Petition to DEFUND the National Women’s Council, Final push needed for signatures of our petition to defund the National Women's Council! ()

Sign the petition and spread the word! ([link removed])

Over 2,800 people have signed the petition in the past weeks calling for the defunding of the National Women’s Council, the taxpayer funded body leading an aggressive push at present for late-term abortion on request to be legalised.

By signing the petition below, you will be adding your voice to the call to defund the NWCI and start over with something better in its place.

It’s disgraceful the way the NWCI claims to represent ALL women, while completely brushing aside the concerns of women who regret their abortions and the majority of women who want to see alternatives to abortion promoted.

The changes we want to see happen won’t occur overnight but that shouldn’t dissuade us from getting started. Together, we must shine a light on the unfairness of what’s happening in order to bring about change.

When you’ve signed the petition, please share the link with family and friends and encourage them to be part of the effort as well. Thanks for all your help!
