We Just Helped Protect New York’s Landmark Climate Act!

A last-minute proposal by Governor Hochul threatened to undermine New York State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), but WE ACT was among the groups that aggressively fought off this attack on the most ambitious state climate law in the nation. WE ACT's Sonal Jessel, who is a member of the New York’s Climate Justice Working Group, joined fellow members of that group in sending a letter of opposition to Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Seggos & NYSERDA President & CEO Harris before walking out of their meeting in protest.

We are glad that the Governor has since backed away from that proposal, and we urge Albany to embrace legislation that will help us achieve the CLCPA’s targets for reducing emissions while ultimately saving ratepayers money – such as the NY HEAT Act (S2016/A4592), the Build Public Renewables Act (S4134/A279), and the All-Electric Building Act (A0092A/S00562A).

* Bringing Environmental Justice to FERC: Dana Johnson was featured in Utility Drive's coverage ([link removed]) of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) first-ever environmental justice roundtable, where she spoke: "It is confounding to us that these projects continue to be rubber stamped even when we acknowledge the devastating impacts to frontline, fenceline and environmental justice communities."
* Opposing H.R. 1: Dana Johnson also voiced our strong opposition ([link removed]) to the House of Representatives passing legislation, H.R.1, encouraging the use of fossil fuels and limiting NEPA, the National Environmental Policy Act that allows communities to weigh in on projects such as pipelines in their community. She explained to EcoWatch how NEPA has helped protect communities of color from the impacts of environmentally harmful projects.
* Defining "Disadvantaged": Sonal Jessel was featured in another article ([link removed]) about the recently approved criteria for defining disadvantaged communities, a critical milestone in implementing New York State's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. As part of the state's Climate Justice Working Group, which helped determine the criteria, she told Gothamist that it's not a perfect tool but one that can still deliver a significant impact.
An earlier article from The City ([link removed]) appeared in the Brooklyn Eagle as well.
* National Public Health Week: And Harlem World featured our latest blog post ([link removed]) , which puts the spotlight on indoor air pollution as part of National Public Health Week.
