Submit a Comment in Support of Improved Animal Care Standards
Dear John,
The US Department of Agriculture, which is responsible for enforcing the Animal Welfare Act, is requesting comments on its plan to propose regulations to improve the handling of wild and exotic animals, as well as the training of personnel who handle them, and to require environmental enrichment for all regulated species.
While we are relieved to see the USDA finally acknowledging that providing for the psychological well-being of animals covered under the law is as important as providing for their physical well-being, the suggestions published in the Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) need some work. We have identified several key issues that the USDA must address in any new regulations, and your input reinforcing the need to address these issues will be critical to how strong any future regulations will be.
