I’ve been a leader in the fight to impeach Trump since day one in Congress, and the work we did to impeach him helped build the accountability that got us here: with Trump facing felony charges.

Yesterday, twice-impeached former President Donald Trump faced 34 felony criminal charges around his illegal attempts to pay hush money to women (and cover it up) during his 2016 campaign.
History will remember Donald Trump not only as the first president to be impeached twice, but the first president to be charged with a crime.
Because of Rashida Tlaib’s unwavering leadership and commitment to this accountability early on, Trump didn’t get away with his lawlessness, and she made sure of that. She led the fight to impeach Trump in the House, and succeeded—twice.

In 2016, in response to Trump’s proposed Muslim ban, Rashida protested at his speech at the Detroit Economic Club, demanding he read the Constitution and noting that his plans for a Muslim ban were unconstitutional. In 2019, in her first months in Congress, she introduced a resolution to impeach Donald Trump.
Even though Trump consistently proved that he was a lawless president and unfit for public office, Democratic leaders told us it was politically impossible to impeach him. They didn’t want to risk the potential blowback. But Rashida kept fighting, working alongside grassroots movements to shift what was possible in order to do what was right.
Despite right-wing hate and threats from Trump, Rashida did not give up. Together, we followed through on that promise to impeach the corrupt and treasonous former president. Twice.
The fight for accountability is not over: This trial and other criminal investigations will continue over the next year. Trump must also be held to account for conspiring to overturn an election, inciting a fascist insurrection, and fueling white supremacist violence.

The violence, destruction, and oppression of Trumpism will not end until we as a country do the hard work of reckoning with white supremacy and finally building a government that serves all of us.
It wasn’t just Trump who spent months spreading vile lies about the election he lost, attempting to disenfranchise Black voters in particular. More than 150 congressional Republicans attempted to overturn the results of 2020’s legitimate election.
And now, even more right-wing state lawmakers (including another fascist Republican presidential candidate) are rapidly translating hateful rhetoric into local policy — banning books and undermining our rights to bodily autonomy, voting, gender expression, and more.
We’re watching them follow the fascist playbook, which means our work is even more urgent.
