John,

The largest outbreak of any disease affecting sea life in history is here. And it could accelerate climate change’s effects on all of us.

A mysterious and sinister illness is wreaking havoc on dozens of starfish — decimating populations and even putting some on the path toward extinction. We say “mysterious” because scientists are still puzzled about what’s causing the “sea star wasting syndrome.” All we know is that it’s slowly turning starfish into goo.

[link removed] [[link removed]] SAVE STARFISH » [[link removed]]John, starfish are more critical to our planet than you may realize. Losing so many sea stars in their ecosystems is a critical break within the food chain. For example, without starfish preying on sea urchins, a booming sea urchin population has free reign to munch on kelp jungles — a critical part of the ocean’s carbon-sinking capabilities. Without thriving sea star populations, we could seriously see climate change take a turn for the worse.

The United States is already starting to take action by protecting one of the hardest hit species, the sunflower sea star, under the Endangered Species Act. But more must be done if we’re going to save the sea star and the planet.

That's where SEEC comes in. SEEC members are fighting every day to save hundreds of species from extinction. Can you chip in today to support their work to preserve endangered species like sea stars? [[link removed]]
