Friend —

We wanted to make sure you saw the big news out of Michigan yesterday: our Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, officially repealed a 1931 law that made it a felony to administer most abortions, including for rape or incest.

Since the fall of Roe at the federal level, the issue of abortion has fallen to the states. The ones that have been able to fight back and preserve abortion access have had two things: an organized plan and strong leaders.

Michigan is a case study for the importance of having a plan. Even before Roe was repealed, key leaders and organizations around the state had been preparing a ballot initiative should the Supreme Court vote to repeal Roe. After word of the repeal was leaked in May 2022, a lot of folks organized quickly and exceeded the 425,059 signatures needed to get the Roe standard on the 2022 ballot. This means Prop 3 was overwhelmingly favored by voters last November. Then, once Democrats won a majority in the state House and Senate, they legislated the repeal of that old 1931 law for good measure.

Michigan is also a case study for the power of strong female leadership. Nearly all of our leaders who got us to this place – the state legislators, the folks at our pro-choice organizations, our Attorney General, our Governor, and countless other tireless organizers – are women. Because of their actions, we’ve preserved women’s rights to make their own health care decisions for generations to come in our state.

Strong female leadership gets results. But at the federal level, only 59 women have ever served in the U.S. Senate – out of 2,002 people total. If elected, Elissa would be the youngest woman to serve in the Senate as a Democrat.

Elissa’s Senate race is going to be one of the most competitive races across the country in 2024, and we need to keep Michigan’s Senate seat blue to keep our Senate majority.

Can you chip in $3 today to help support Michigan’s legacy of strong female leadership?
