John,
We all love a party! That's why we're throwing a big bash to celebrate that it’s now official: Washington Environmental Council and Washington Conservation Voters have unified under a new brand, named Washington Conservation Action. Please join us on Friday, May 5th at the Burke Museum for community, fellowship, an engaging program, and delicious food & drink prepared by Off the Rez. [[link removed]]
We are thrilled to announce that our guest speaker is Frank Brown, a member of the Heiltsuk Nation of Bella Bella in Canada. Frank’s Hereditary Chiefs-Yím̓ ás name is λáλíya̓ sila meaning “preparing for the largest potlatch.” The name is apt because Brown has led the resurgence in ocean-going Indigenous canoe journeys throughout the Pacific Coast, an ancient tradition in which Tribes travelled to each other’s homes by canoe to participate in large potlaches, or parties.
Brown planned the “Tribal Journeys” events in Bella Bella in 2005 and 2014. He also produced and co-curated the “Sacred Journeys,” a travelling exhibit about Indigenous canoe culture. An adjunct professor of resource and environmental management at Simon Fraser University, Brown also does work related to ecotourism, forestry, and fisheries. We’re excited to hear his stories, his experience working in many of the issue-areas Washington Conservation Action is involved, and how his culture has shaped his path.
