NORTH CAROLINA’S FAIR MAPS ARE IN DANGER!

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

November 8, 2022 : North Carolina voters go to the polls in an election held on the fairest congressional map the state has seen in decades. An even number of Democrats and Republicans are elected to Congress in the 50-50 state.

December 16, 2022: North Carolina Supreme Court strikes down remedial state Senate map as an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander and affirms the trial court’s adoption of a fair congressional map for the 2022 election.

January 1, 2023: New state supreme court is seated, with composition, specifically the majority, changing due to fall election.

January 20, 2023: Conservative legislative leaders file a petition for rehearing in Harper v. Hall, requesting the court revisit the decision that held them accountable and overturned their maps that violated the state constitution.

February 3, 2023: North Carolina Supreme Court grants the petition for rehearing, an unprecedented move, given that nothing in the case has changed -- only the court's composition.

March 14, 2023: North Carolina Supreme Court holds oral argument on rehearing in Harper v. Hall.
