She told me she was a proud retired teacher, an organizer in her neighborhood, raised two granddaughters who are now attending college, and that she did those things all while fighting her own serious health issues.
Yes, her story had struggle. But what I saw was her strength, her unwavering spirit, and her ability to build a life in a world stacked against her.
And while I was sitting there listening to her story, all I could think was — how can our senator tell this woman she doesn’t deserve all the healthcare she needs to stay alive? That her granddaughters have to earn the right to go to college without the burden of debt?
We can no longer afford to be held down by leaders who only use their power to tell us “no.” It’s time for us to stand together and build a country that takes care of our needs.
