April is Membership Month! Join the fight for better transit in San Francisco. Donations $25 and above get a free T-Shirt!

As a leading transit rider advocacy organization in San Francisco, we empower everyday transit riders to raise their collective voices to advocate for pro-rider policies. Our members give us the political, financial and volunteer power to accomplish goals we would otherwise not be able to achieve.

Without a strong and growing membership, none of this would have been possible. Our members give us power and credibility, in meetings with SFMTA and in public with the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Because of you, when we speak up, they listen.

Public transportation in San Francisco isn’t perfect, but every day we’re taking another step toward making it better, toward a more livable, sustainable, accessible city. We hope you'll consider donating to SFTR today to help us continue the fight. A donation at any level makes you a member, but donations of $25 and up will get you a free t-shirt!

Thank you to everyone who joined our membership forum!

We started Membership Month early this year with a Members Forum last month. We discussed the state of Muni and brainstormed responses to SFMTA's fiscal cliff. There was some great feedback from members, including support for expanding parking hours and fees to increase SFMTA's revenue, and the importance of prioritizing service restoration and increasing ridership. We appreciated hearing your ideas about how SFMTA can increase revenue while being more accountable to riders, including by increasing the ten-minute limit for remote public comment at SFMTA Board meetings. We also heard that members are interested in fare-free Muni as a way to encourage ridership and potentially rally support around a future funding measure. Above all, we heard attendees say that SFMTA cannot ask riders to pay more now for less service, and that we should continue advocating to ensure that public transit stays as affordable as possible. Thank you to all who attended! We are using your insights to respond to the fiscal situation and advocate for a world-class transit system that we can all rely on.

Addressing riders’ safety concerns

To achieve the transit-oriented vision of San Francisco that we strive for, everybody must be safe and comfortable while riding the bus. While reported crimes on Muni are currently at historic lows, our outreach shows that safety continues to be a concern for riders. In order to increase ridership as the pandemic wanes, SFMTA will need to make changes to ensure that riders feel confident that their Muni trips will be free from violence and harassment. SFMTA should demonstrate its commitment to safety and justice by expanding its Muni Transit Assistance Program (MTAP), which employs unarmed transit ambassadors to keep riders safe and informed while riding transit.
